In October, Ivanhoé Cambridge and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts announced the details surrounding the major renovation project planned for Montreal’s preeminent downtown hotel, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth. Ivanhoé Cambridge, our owners, will invest CAD $140 million to transform the hotel experience at our world renowned property.

The transformation will mark the hotel’s return as a leading luxury international business destination. After its transformation, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel will offer an innovative business campus developed by the creative teams at Sid Lee. The campus will include a set of interconnected and accessible public meeting and multifunctional spaces where businesspeople will be able to engage in creative, collaborative and innovative experiences. This living environment will be oriented towards stimulating creativity and promoting business ingenuity.

The hotel will also offer an array of impressive restaurants and bars, as well as an urban market that will be unique in downtown Montreal. Its new open spaces will host varied cultural and commercial events and activities featuring exciting programming. The hotel will remain the largest hotel in Canada, East of Toronto with 952 guest rooms.

To execute the renovations, the hotel will close in mid-June 2016 and will reopen in June 2017. All the common areas and about 500 guest rooms will be ready for the celebrations marking the 375th anniversary of Montreal and the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. The remainder of the rooms will be completed by December 2017.

Sustainability

At Fairmont, we’re committed to making a difference in the communities where our guests and colleagues live, work and play. More than 20 years ago, we pioneered our comprehensive Green Partnership Program, through which we’ve worked diligently to minimize the impact our properties have on the planet. In addition to the establishment of Green Teams at each of our hotels, our Green Partnership program led to the creation of environmentally conscious initiatives such as Eco-Meet, Greening our Greens and our Eco-Innovations Signature program.

However, sustainability is about more than just the environment. We focus our efforts across three areas of priority— social, economic and environmental. For us, it’s about demonstrating accountability and integrity in the way we conduct business, improving the well-being of local communities and ecosystems, addressing the environmental impacts of our operations, and engaging our stakeholders in a meaningful and collaborative manner.

Sustainability Teams at each of our properties represent our passionate commitment to being a responsible business and to following the principles of sustainability across our operations. In addition to our commitment to measuring and improving sustainability performance in the long term, the Fairmont Sustainability Partnership provides the framework by which Fairmont’s hotels and resorts operate around the globe.
