  1. Peterborough is home to the world’s highest hydraulic lift lock; a National Historic Site of Canada on the Trent Severn Waterway – enjoy the flow of life.
  2. Peterborough is home to the Canadian Canoe Museum, which has the largest collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft in the world.
  3. Petroglyphs Provincial Park, located in Peterborough County has the largest known concentration of indigenous rock carvings in Canada.
  4. You can see 2 of only a handful of authentic Jacquard looms that can be viewed in North America at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.
  5. Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is the largest wilderness preserve south of Algonquin Park in Ontario.
  6. Some of Canada’s literary greats called Peterborough & the Kawarthas home, including Margaret Laurence, Catharine Parr Traill, Susanna Moodie and Robertson Davies.
  7. There are almost as many restaurants per capita in Peterborough & the Kawarthas as there are in Toronto or Montreal.
  8. Peterborough has an outstanding music scene. Many famous musicians are from or connected to the region, including Serena Ryder, I Mother Earth, Three Days Grace, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Rockin’ Ronnie Hawkins and more. You can check out free outdoor concerts overlooking Little Lake in Downtown Peterborough every Wednesday and Saturday evening in July and August at Peterborough Musicfest.
  9. Warsaw Caves Conservation Area & Campground, just outside of Peterborough you can go spelunking in a series of 7 caves formed thousands of years ago byt the melting rushwaters of a glacier that covered Ontario. It’s also home to one of the “Top 100 Unusual Things to See in Ontario” – a disappearing river.
  10. You know about the outdoor skating along the Rideau Canal in our nations capital in the winter, but did you know the same experience is available along the Trent Canal at the base of the Peterborough Lift lock?
  11. There are close to 300 kms of signed road cycling routes called the Peterborough & the Kawarthas Classics.
  12. Hands down, Peterborough & the Kawarthas has some of the best and most diverse fishing in Ontario, so it’s no surprise that Peterborough is home to the Ontario Federation of Angler’s and Hunters and their Hunting & Fishing Heritage Centre, which has a variety of impressive dioramas, a record fish wall, airgun and arrow ranges and a beautiful amphitheatre
  13. Overlooking Rice Lake, set on a stunning farm property, you’ll find a surprisingly large collection of Zimbabwean Shona Stone carvings at Zimart Rice Lake Gallery. In the summer and early fall you can meet an artist in residence from Zimbabwe and take part in carving workshops too.
  14. Peterborough & the Kawarthas is all about hands-on experiences – whether you’re looking to carve your own paddle and make your own snowshoe, put your art skills to the test or take part in traditional Ojibwa craft making, there’s a wide variety of workshops and hands-on learning opportunities for delegates and visitors alike.
