Creating Revenue from Digital Sponsorship – Where to Begin?

IMG_474511111

The emergence of digital media has opened the door for show organizers to use digital signage to transform their next event and enhance the attendee experience. With the addition of four new digital walls in our facility and more to come, planners now have a new and unique opportunity to enhance their sponsorship and advertising strategy while generating engagement and revenue.

Here at the MTCC, event organizers have the unique opportunity to consult with our dedicated in-house Digital Media and Advertising Sales Manager, Frank Bourne, to discuss revenue-generating ideas, trends in sponsorship activation, attendee engagement etc. Frank is an important resource for any show organizer, not only does he manage the content of the digital screens, he can also help guide your strategy to get the best results and revenue outcome.

So, where should planners begin to make more revenue from their digital sponsorship strategy?

Here are a few tips:

1. Discuss sponsorship goals and strategy during the initial stages of planning

To create the most cost-effective, impactful branding and sponsorship strategy for your event, establish your vision and budget for sponsorship early in the planning stages. Park a budget line, discuss targeting and take advantage of our in-house consultant as soon as possible. This will give you more time to create great content and evaluate all your options. Some show organizers leave sponsorship and branding until the end of their to-do list and miss key opportunities.

2. Balance your sponsorship and advertising campaign with a heavier emphasis on digital

Simple static ads are still effective, but many shows now understand the importance of taking one step further into digital advertising because it’s cost effective, efficient and can generate attendee engagement, an industry hot topic. For example, at a recent OpenText conference, attendees competed in teams to collect points and the live tally of scores appeared on our digital wall. Attendees would frequently stand in front of it to see their team’s standing in the game, offering a fun way for sponsors or ads to get lots of exposure. People are more likely to commit something to memory if they’re directly involved with it.

3. Create a sponsorship opportunities package

Once your team has established sponsorship offerings, create a package and identify suggested activation areas that will work best for exhibitors and other stakeholders, based on their target audience.

4. Enhance attendee engagement in new innovative ways

There are many unique and interesting ways a planner can take digital to the next level. Don’t forget that you can always use a mix of content in a loop. Here are a few examples:

  •  Live Social Media Feeds

A live feed of tweets and photos can be displayed on our massive digital screens. This is an effective way to promote your event #hashtag and remind attendees to engage with each other, your content, exhibitors and/or speakers.

  • Interesting Facts, Trivia

Engage your attendees in a new way with fun and informative facts or trivia questions about your conference topic or organization. Provide your event #hashtag for further social media buzz and discussion.

  • Video!

Video is a trend we can no longer ignore, and our digital signs are the best way for your video to make an impact on your attendees.

  • Static Images

Images of any type can be displayed on our digital screens. A few ideas include photos, a special message from the company president, your logo or sponsor logos, and wayfinding indications that show attendees exactly where to go.

For more information on our digital screens, please contact Frank Bourne, Digital Media and Advertising Sales Manager, at fbourne@mtccc.com.

2. 2017 will be a record year! We will host 16 major conventions in 2017, this is more than we have ever hosted before in one fiscal year. Convention topics will range from midwifery to financial services and the list includes SIBOS 2017 and the American Society of Association Executives Annual Meeting and Exposition (ASAE 2017).

3. Our vision statement is “we help our customers create successful events” and we mean it.

4. We take pride in our highly successful food donation program. This program ensures that any food items not required by events are stored and donated to food banks and organization in Toronto. The program was started in 2009 and has seen a total of 77,859kg donated and 19,254kg being donated in 2016 alone. A few of our partners include Second Harvest, the Toronto District School Board’s Student Nutrition Program, and Scott Mission.

5. We love coffee and so do our attendees. 1.4million cups of coffee are served annually at the MTCC, which amounts to an outstanding 3,836 cups per day.

6. There are well over 11,000 hotel rooms within a mile of our facility, not to mention the mini shampoo bottles and room keys.

7. We are linked to the PATH, Toronto’s downtown pedestrian walkway, which provides attendees access to 1,200 shops and services spanning over 30 kilometres. Toronto’s PATH is recognized as the world’s biggest underground shopping complex. It can be accessed via our South Building.

8. We serve a very diverse and international city and this diversity is reflected in our staff. Our employees can speak an astounding 42 different languages and come from a multitude of cultural backgrounds.

9. Our facility occasionally serves as a movie, TV and commercial set. The MTCC has been the backdrop for Total Recall, Suits, The Rick Mercer Report, and Justin Trudeau’s escalator commercial.

10. Perhaps the most important fact of all is that we host over 500 events annually, which allows us to generate approximately $400 million to $500 million in economic impact each year for Toronto. This contribution in turn creates approximately 4,000 jobs in the community. Booking a meeting at the MTCC is, in fact, making a difference in our city.

There are many motives why organizations and groups continue to choose to meet in Montréal. Here are six of our favourites — compelling reasons why our team and our city is a great match for your big event.

A CITY THAT HAS IT ALL

Easy to love

Geographically, Montréal is rooted in North America, yet the city exudes an emphatically European sensibility. Delegates love to come here (and to return here) for our patented joie de vivre spirit (which literally translates as “joy of living”). From the thriving culinary scene to the charming side streets to the over 100 cutting-edge festivals, Montréal has undeniable curb appeal — big city attractions with a small town welcome. Take advantage of it.

Easy to get to from anywhere

The newly renovated, ultra-modern Montréal-Trudeau airport (YUL) makes an ideal international hub with direct flights to 130 global destinations. We’re a short hop (<2 hours) from many American cities, such as New York, Chicago, Washington and Boston. In the past year alone, Air Canada has unveiled six new direct routes to Montréal, including three American hubs: Houston, Denver and Philadelphia. We’re closer than you think.

Easy to get around

Ranked as one of the safest cities in the world, Montréal is also compact and convenient. In other destinations, the “local” convention centre is tucked away in the back forty. In Montréal, the Palais des congrès is in the heart of the city — walkable to 15,000 hotel rooms. (Bonus: 4000 of those rooms are directly connected to the convention centre.)

Montréal Celebrates 375 Years of History With An Entire Year of Festivities!

375Years

Montréal is a city that loves to celebrate and, in 2017, with activities and surprises around every corner the island will be more festive than ever.

The year is an ideal time for groups of all sizes to use the city as a backdrop for a meeting or event. Whether a reward trip, a strategic board meeting or anything in between, here are a few ways to take advantage of the festivities!

THE BIG THEMES!

The year of celebrations will be divided into four distinct themes. Which one works best for your group?

Montréal lights up
(December 2016 – January 2017)
The festivities launched at the end of 2016. Montréal lights up and shines city-wide: downtown skyscrapers, residential neighbourhoods, public spaces, the summit of Mount Royal. The city will be illuminated. It promises to be a great, magical gathering that will bring together everyone who loves Montréal. An inspiring setting for a last-minute board meeting.

Montréal gets moving
(February – April 2017)
Montréal’s northern energy is the inspiration behind the many activities that invite people to play outside in the winter and early spring air. Sports, recreational and competitive activities as well as other festivities will be on the program. Team building activities abound.

Montréal ignites
(May – September 2017)
It’s time to celebrate Montréal’s roots: its history and heritage, not to mention its identity and diversity, in high style! Festivals, tastings, church bell concerts and neighbourhood tours — the list is long. Montrealers and visitors will have the time of their life. The perfect time for a cocktail party or reward trip!

Montréal reinvents
(October – December 2017)
With 2017 coming to a close, it’s time to look toward the future. Let’s take advantage of the enthusiasm and positive energy sparked by the 375th celebrations to propel Montréal forward for the next 25 years. It’s the perfect atmosphere for strategic, long-term team planning!

What better way to pay tribute to Montréal’s 375th anniversary as one of the most vibrant cities in North America than by preserving, and creating, the legacy of the future?

There are some three-dozen so-called “legacy projects” either already underway or scheduled to commence in the months to come at key locations throughout the city. They are comprised of all sizes and forms of initiatives designed to transform the way one experiences the city. From a lengthy new promenade, to a modern-day cruise terminal makeover, to avant garde artistic expressions, these improvements and additions will provide numerous benefits for both visitors and Montrealers alike in the years to come.

Visit our blog to see a few of these exciting projects that will reshape the city.

What the heck is IAAC!

I was attending a conference at the prestigious Centre Mont-Royal in the heart of downtown Montreal last month. I was instantly impressed by the chic, intimate environment of this actually large venue. I stepped into a wide foyer with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows facing Mount-Royal for a quick cup of coffee before the meeting started. By the way, from yours truly who adores a cup of good Starbucks java each morning, this coffee was delicious. Kudos to their coffee bean supplier!

I made my way to the meeting room and found a seat up front. What struck me as a little odd when I took my place was that the tables weren’t covered with any type of tablecloth. I’m sort of a meeting connaisseur since I attend a lot of conferences throughout the year and I had never sat down in a meeting with a few hundred people where the tables were non-reflective and laminated. It was amazing! Tables you can actually write notes on with no glare from the presentation. Very cool. I glanced down at the complementary pad and pen in front of me and saw the letters IAAC.  “What the heck is IAAC?” I asked myself.

The meeting topic itself was interesting but after 4 hours of sitting and listening to the outright leader in combustion energy equations, I noticed something really unusual. It was inevitable at this point in any meeting that my back would start to get twitchy and restless and I would start wishing for a comfortable lounge chair by the pool.  But I was still comfortable. It turned out I had been sitting on an ergonomic 8-hour chair. I’ve been in movie theatres that didn’t have chairs that comfortable. The chairs were something I didn’t find out about until I started reading up on what the heck is IAAC!  Who knew venues like this really existed?

It turns out IAAC stands for International Association of Conference Centres, which is the premiere professional association of it’s kind in the world. IACC’s members in the Americas, Europe, and Australia form an elite group representing the most innovative, forward-thinking, and results-driven meeting venues and people in the conference industry. IACC member conference centers don’t just adhere to the highest standards of service, they create those standards, like the 8-hour chairs. It’s hard enough for a speaker to hold the meeting’s attention for a full afternoon, but it’s doubly hard when no one is comfortable. I looked around that meeting and everyone was awake and participating. I also noticed that I took far more notes than I usually do in a meeting because those non-reflective tables are easier to work on. They’re also very satisfying to drum quietly on.

There was one other thing about that meeting. The air quality was amazing. Let’s face it, you put that many people in a closed hall for that long and inevitably the atmosphere gets a little heavy and stale. But that hall was so well ventilated that if it had been a bit warmer I could have imagined myself in that lounge chair by pool. It turns out that’s another IACC standard.

There is only one IACC member conference center in Québec, the Centre Mont-Royal in downtown Montreal also known as CMR by all of my meeting cronies.

IACC membership is difficult to achieve. You can’t just send them money and slap a logo on your website, you have to earn it. You have to prove that your centre meets IACC standards in the quality of your meeting spaces; pricing; technological infrastructure, food and beverage service…Don’t get me started on the food & beverage which was fresh and fantastic. They don’t do these things for fun; they do them because they make a difference in the quality of the meeting that they host.

So now, when I go to a conference, I’m going to check to see if the venue is an IACC member. If they are, I’m going to be a much happier camper.

Where to Shop at Walking Distance from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre

Our conference and event attendees can always rest assured that they are only a few steps away from the best Toronto has to offer. And luckily for those of us who enjoy a little retail therapy, this applies to shopping as well! Whether you’re looking to buy a quick souvenir or have plenty of time to shop, the potential shopping adventures are endless and most importantly easily accessible from your event here at MTCC.
Because even attendees who have very limited free time should get a chance to bring something special home, here are the top shopping destinations at walking distance from the MTCC (including where to get the best unique souvenirs!):

Spacing Store
Total walking time: 10 minutes (depart from North Building)

Why shop here: This is the top destination for clever Toronto-specific souvenirs (such as the Toronto Maple Leaf pillow set shown above!). Hip locals can be seen proudly wearing the store’s “Toronto vs. Everybody” shirts and subway station buttons.

Drake General Store at UP Express
Total walking time: 5 minutes (via the PATH accessible in South Building)

Why shop here: Drake General Store is guaranteed to please those looking for unique, eclectic souvenirs. Items available for purchase are the coolest Canada has to offer, including poutine bowls, Mountie thermoses, and rock coasters.

Jays Shop
Total walking time: 7 minutes (depart from South Building)

Why shop here: This one is for the sports fans. Find the best Toronto Blue Jays merchandise at the Jays shop, located in the Rogers Centre just steps away from your event or conference. The Blue Jays thrilled Toronto fans in 2015 when they clinched the American League East division title.

CN Tower Gift Shop
Total walking time: 5 minutes (depart from South Building)

Why shop here: The CN Tower Gift Shop is 8,000 square feet of classic souvenir items and local artisan designs. It is located inside Toronto’s most iconic landmark, the CN Tower, declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

For All Other Shopping Needs

The PATH Eaton Centre
Total walking time: 0 for the PATH, 25 minutes for the Toronto Eaton Centre

Why shop here: Many attendees may not know that the MTCC is connected to the world’s largest underground shopping complex with 30 km (19 miles) of shopping paradise. The retail space connected to the PATH rivals the West Edmonton Mall in size; however, be forewarned that even locals may find it tricky to navigate. Review a map prior to exploring. The PATH is ideal for escaping rain, snow, or hot temperatures, and most importantly it is connected to Toronto’s top shopping mall, the Toronto Eaton Centre.
