  • Creative concepts were designed for each breakout room, and we were able to bring these designs to life through partnering with Loungeworks.
  • The plenary theatre was transformed with LED walls to create a beautifully designed main stage with cat walk
  • The closing party was enhanced with lighting and tremendous entertainment

HOW EDMONTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IS BEING RE-IMAGINED

Following the Smart Airports conference that wrapped up here in Edmonton in July the Edmonton International Airport (EIA) introduced its new digital strategy . Airport executives from across North America attended the conference to discuss how technology is changing airports and to witness what EIA has been working on.

EIA demonstrated its new autonomous all-terrain vehicles that will patrol the perimeter security fence of the airport. This artificial intelligence technology was developed by the Alberta Centre for Advanced Microprocessor and Nanotechnology Products (ACAMP), and its programming includes functions such as navigation, path planning, obstacle avoidance, animal and human recognition, communication directed to airport security, geo-fencing, situational awareness and analysis and more.

EIA has already begun its digital transformation with initiatives already underway like the autonomous ATVs, flight training simulators, and the Robird and integrated drone solutions introduced last year. Future initiatives include interactive maps and digital wayfinding, face recognition and passenger tracking, and improved baggage service.

EDMONTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT “AIRPORT CITY” DEVELOPMENTS

EIA’s “Airport City” developments include the Premium Outlet Connection opened this year, and future growth of the innovation-focused Alberta Aerospace and Technology Centre, home to Promethean Labs, Aerium Analytics, Absolute Combustion, ACAMP, and the Alberta Motor Transport Association.

CANNABIS LEGALIZATION MEANS BIG BUSINESS IN EDMONTON

You can watch more about the RavenQuest Edmonton facility in this video showcase.

Marijuana legalization is monopolizing the news and sparking interest across the country. Edmonton has responded proactively by embracing cannabis commerce focused in production, management services and consulting, and specialized research and development. The Aurora Sky Project is an 800,000 square foot medicinal cannabis production facility near the Edmonton International Airport, and is the largest, most technologically advanced in the world. This facility has drawn attention to Edmonton as a gathering place for cannabis education, dialogue and commerce along with producers that are established in Edmonton like RavenQuest BioMed Inc.

With so much excitement and ingenuity centred on the cannabis industry in Edmonton, it is becoming a hotspot for cannabis related gatherings too. The Edmonton Cannabis & Hemp Expo came to the Edmonton Expo Centre in April, and just two months later, thousands more attended CannabisCon at the Shaw Conference Centre, a conference designed specifically for businesses and consumers interested in learning more about the changing industry.

RavenQuest BioMed Inc. is a publicly traded cannabis company with divisions focused upon various dimensions of the cannabis industry. They are a licensed producer with facilities located in Markham, Ontario and now, Edmonton, Alberta. This year RavenQuest BioMed Inc. unveiled its “Orbital Garden technology — OG 2.0,” which is described as state-of-the-art cannabis production technology. George Robinson, Chief Executive Officer at RavenQuest BioMed Inc., had lots to say in our Q&A about this exciting time for the cannabis industry in Edmonton.

Q&A WITH GEORGE ROBINSON, CEO OF RAVENQUEST BIOMED INC.

What about Edmonton has made it an ideal location for the RavensQuest to setup base?

Edmontonians have a can-do spirit in everything they do.  RavenQuest has deep roots here with many of our top executives calling Edmonton home.  When presented with the opportunity to base one of our facilities in Edmonton, we jumped on it as we are aware of the forward looking, entrepreneurial spirit that has always set Edmontonians apart.

Can you sum up the RQB difference apart from other competitors?

RavenQuest places innovation and science at the centre of everything we do.  Our advanced grow methodologies will revolutionize how cannabis is produced.  We also place a great amount of importance around sustainability and partnering with Indigenous communities, which is why we have agreements in place with both Fort McMurray First Nation #468 as well as Alexander First Nation, located just north of Edmonton’s border.

What collaborations or partnerships in the Greater Edmonton Region has helped make this endeavour possible?

We’re very proud to be working with TWS Engineering here in town, a great local partner who’s been instrumental in the completion of our Edmonton project.

What’s one thing you are excited for in the future of RQB in Edmonton?

Helping people lead more enriched lives.  Whether that means providing meaningful local employment or producing a product that can provide lifestyle improvement for our clients, we look forward to RQB having a positive impact in and around the Edmonton community.

WE EMBRACED RISK, AND IT CHANGED EVERYTHING.
Article from Conventus Newsletter – October

It’s tough to pinpoint exactly when we realized that risk-taking and innovative thinking was at the heart of Edmonton, but once we did, we embraced it and never looked back. Now, we celebrate the energy and confidence of our communities because we know they’ve pioneered, and continue to elevate, our reputation as a hub where groundbreaking ideas take-off and new industries come to life.

Recognizing the power of our entrepreneurial community, investments have been made in infrastructure and programs to support start-up and scale-up industries. Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) has been instrumental with the establishment of Innovate Edmonton, TEC Edmonton, Startup Edmonton, the Advanced Technology Centre, and the Edmonton Research Park.

“Startup Edmonton was born out of a passionate community of leaders in technology and entrepreneurship. Over the past nine years, we have witnessed incredible growth and are seeing more founders, mentors, investors, and students engage with the opportunities afforded to them by the inclusive and hands-on approach of our work.”Tiffany Linke-Boyko, CEO, Startup Edmonton. Find her on LinkedIn.

These organizations, backed by the City of Edmonton, have been instrumental in forming our innovation corridor. This is a network of places where innovation, entrepreneurship, the arts, creativity and vibrant urban life intersect. It reaches through downtown from the University of Alberta to NAIT and is a catalyst for growth and creative partnerships.

Recent major health advancements like the Edmonton Protocol, a breakthrough treatment for Type I Diabetes, has spurred on Edmonton’s Health City Initiative (HCI). HCI accelerates health technology and research in cardiology, oncology, transplantation, and virology, and is a key piece of the innovation corridor.

The innovation corridor also fuels Edmonton’s impressive artificial intelligence research. Recognized globally, we were selected for Google DeepMind’s first international office and the UofA’s Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute, known for their staggering range of AI projects, was one of only a handful of schools to receive Pan-Canadian AI Strategy funding from the Canadian government in 2017.

As a part of EEDC, Edmonton Tourism and the Meetings and Conventions team has the advantage of sitting down the hall from leaders of the innovation corridor. This means we know the latest trends from our city’s incubators and are up to date on research emerging from our finest academic institutions. We use that knowledge to connect you with the right person to collaborate with to transform your meeting or convention into a truly thought-provoking and eye-opening experience.

“Edmontonians are inventive, open, and we know that a good idea can go a long way on its own, but when we come together to collaborate and innovate that good idea becomes something even more remarkable. When you come here, you feel that.”Anna Look, Director, Meetings and Conventions. Find her on LinkedIn.

Edmonton has always been all-in, whether it’s for attracting conferences, start-ups, investments, or any partnerships that benefit our city. With the whole city behind us, it’s easy for us to take risks, which makes it even easier for us to make amazing experiences happen.

EDMONTON AS A HOTBED FOR HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENCES

The Metro Edmonton region has a strong and growing health and life sciences industry sector. Approximately 60% of all Albertan life science companies are located here; it is the largest integrated healthcare system with the highest healthcare spend in Canada. As such, we have identified Edmonton as one of our most established economic sectors for meeting and conventions business in this industry. Here are three astonishing health innovations that have come from Edmonton and are being noticed.

  1. Going Scalpel-less

Specialists at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute made headlines for ground-breaking techniques. Cardiac surgeon Jeevan Nagendran created Western Canada’s first dedicated program for “closed chest open heart surgery.” Using state-of-the-art tools and camera equipment, Nagendran’s team can repair a patient’s heart through a tiny hole between their ribs.

And that’s not all for scalpel-less technologies. Scalpel-free brain surgery wasn’t created in Edmonton, but The University of Alberta Hospital’s new Gamma Knife technology is some of the most advanced of its kind in Canada. It allows surgeons to zap an area as tiny as a millimeter with radiation, without damaging surrounding tissue.

For the coming years, we are thrilled to have the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress bringing an expected 1000 attendees to Edmonton. The planners are building an extremely rich learning environment alongside the The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute-a world leader in complex cardiac care and innovative surgery technologies.

  2. Cutting-Edge Prosthetics

Patrick Pilarski, at The University of Alberta’s SMART Network, has been working on algorithms that help amputees control their prosthetic limbs more easily and has produced, what they call, the most advanced prosthetic arm in the world. Not only does this robotic limb move almost exactly like the real thing (the fingers could eventually be fine-tuned to play the piano), but it can analyze data from the wearer and predicts what movement that person needs next.

  3. Health Cities Initiative

In Edmonton, our health innovation experts have united to demonstrate the power and strength of our robust health sector. Just last year, the City of Edmonton launched a new initiative to prioritize health innovation and build Edmonton as “Canada’s Health City”. Health City is an economic development initiative that leverages Edmonton’s health industry to position the city as a premier location for health innovation. Health City operates in the space between existing and traditional health industry partners, building pathways and ease of access for innovation and collaboration with national and international partners.

Now, we are seeing a stronger ecosystem that is actively attracting, retaining and supporting health-related talent. Thanks to a strong network of six post-secondary institutions, Edmonton has one of the largest pools of highly skilled talent in the country, and each institution plays an integral part in delivering innovative care, engaging in world-class research and commercializing new technologies.

The Health City project has resulted in increased access to capital and accelerated health technology and research. The Health City initiative has touched an impressive array of ongoing projects specialized in cardiology, oncology, transplantation, and virology, and continues to build great connections for planners looking to host their meetings in Edmonton.

In the federal government’s $50-million Smart Cities Challenge, Edmonton’s Health City pitch has been announced as one of the five finalists this year. Infrastructure Canada is strongly considering Edmonton’s proposal, which focuses on having residents, post-secondary institutions, research organizations and governments work together to provide health services to Edmontonians.

FOR PLANNERS

We know that the role of a great destination marketing organization goes beyond providing access to venues. Our All-In promise is to help connect planners with our local industry experts. Connecting planners with our life science industry influencers means having a direct link to our health, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals sectors, several specialized hospitals and leading health research institutes. In addition, through Edmonton Tourism’s Influencer Program, we have access to a wide spectrum of passionate speakers and researchers eager to tell their story. Whatever your field, you can get in touch with our research team to connect you with an Edmontonian that is well-versed on the subject. Together, we can create more transformative meetings and gatherings.
